Hamilton, ON, July 21, 2026 – Recent wildfires in northern Ontario have given Trump and his Republican supporters fresh ammunition towards an ongoing trade war with Canada.
Criticism from some Republican House representatives and a Senator, which has been echoed by the president, included calls for sanctions towards Canada as wildfire smoke moved south across several US states. In a social media post shared on Friday, Trump claimed the US was being “invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air” and hinted at economic penalties, such as tariffs.
Premier Doug Ford suggested that the US should send help and support, as Canada has done for American wildfires, rather than “chirping away.”
Whether the administration will act on the threats remains to be seen. Many angered Ontario residents are pointing to the Ford government’s cuts to forest management as a prime driver of the recent wildfires.
